In a strong display of diplomatic support, the European Union has praised Algeria’s expanding role in the global fight against climate change. During the official launch of the “Clim-Gov2” project in Algiers, the EU Ambassador to Algeria, Diego Mellado Pascua, underscored the alignment of environmental ambitions between Europe and Algeria, marking a new chapter in their bilateral cooperation.
« Europe has made an irreversible and bold commitment to the ecological transition. It is now a core part of our economic model, our competitiveness, and our identity. It is inspiring to see that Algeria shares this vision, » declared the ambassador.
An Inclusive, Citizen-Centered Climate Transition
Ambassador Mellado Pascua emphasized Algeria’s growing engagement in climate governance that prioritizes inclusivity and social equity. He noted that current initiatives reflect a genuine effort to embed climate action at the local level, mirroring the EU’s own Green Deal, which places citizens at the heart of environmental policy.
« This localised approach resonates deeply with the European Green Deal, » he stated. « Climate justice is fundamental. The green transition must include everyone — citizens and businesses alike. »
The diplomat also called for the development of a competitive green economy in Algeria, stressing the need to support innovative startups, help traditional industries adapt, and foster economic resilience during this critical shift.
Civic Engagement and Bilateral Cooperation on the Rise
Reflecting on his recent discussions with Algeria’s Minister of Environment, the ambassador commended the increasing activism of Algerian civil society and the rising public interest in sustainable consumption. These trends, he said, are essential to building a culture of environmental responsibility.
The Clim-Gov2 initiative, launched as part of a broader EU-Algeria partnership, aims to strengthen local climate governance and integrate sustainability more deeply into public policy and community planning.
« This project is a reflection of the strong and resilient cooperation between Algeria and the European Union, » noted Mellado Pascua.
In a world grappling with environmental, economic, and geopolitical uncertainty, the ambassador emphasized the strategic importance of global alliances rooted in shared values and concrete actions. He concluded by expressing confidence in Algeria’s growing role on the international stage:
« I am convinced that Algeria will be a strong and credible voice in the upcoming global climate negotiations. »
